Child care benefit is a benefit that will help you as a single mother or father, to pay for the supervision of the child so that you can work, be a real job or be in education.
Who can receive child care benefit?
You must complete certain conditions to be eligible for benefits as a single mother or father.
The conditions are mainly:
- You and your child must have lived in Norway for the last three years.
- You and your child must stay you in Norway.
- You must be unmarried, divorced or separated.
- You must be the sole care of the child.
- You must not have any relationship to the other parent of the child that may mean that you are a single mother or father.
You can read more about the terms of the Insurance Act, the Regulations in the right menu.
Some of the conditions can be waived. NAV office can provide further information about this.
If you meet the requirements, you can get child care benefits when you must leave the supervision of the child to others because you work, the real job, attend school or study. You can also get child care benefits when you establish your own business.
It is a condition that you leave the responsibility to others, such as day care, after-school care (SFO) or childminder. There is also a requirement that you pay for the audit.
How long can you get the child care benefit?
As a general rule, you can get the benefit of the child has completed the fourth school year. If you have children who need substantially more supervision than their peers, you can receive compensation under the fourth school year. You must prove such a claim with a medical certificate or similar. Compensation can also be extended if the work or your education means you must be away from home for extended periods or have irregular working hours (such as rotation or shift work). The employment, supervision relationship and what you pay, must be documented.
If you are temporarily ill, you can keep the benefit for up to one year so you do not lose your supervision arrangement. It assumes that your child continue to receive supervision of others while you are sick, and you continue to pay for the audit.
Child care benefit is normally granted for one year at a time. The benefit is stopped normally during holiday months when kindergartens and SFO are closed. You must remember to apply for benefits in good time before the next barnehage-/skoleår.
What can you get?
Child care benefit is covered with 64 percent of the documented expenses up to the same fees as the Parliament has decided. That means you must pay at least 36 percent of the costs themselves.
If your annual income is greater than six times the basic amount , you have no right to child care benefit. Child care benefit is a tax-free benefit and the benefit is paid from the month you meet the conditions.
